Six top professional surfers compete at Red Bull Night Riders under the moon and stars at Florida’s Flagler Beach Pier. Florida’s top aerialists took part in the event, including Cody Thompson, Aaron Cormican, Eric Geiselman, Alek Parker, Ryan Briggs and Jesse Heilman.

Each beat has its own speed, each tempo suggests certain images: Timo Novotny’s video for Richard Dorfmeister’s Sofa Surfers remix, which was shot in Japan on Super-8 film, begins with an aerial view of a construction site and a crane. As the bass begins softly, the images start to move up along a vertical line, apparently reflecting the path of an elevator. Everything is transparent, everything is structured: The scaffolding is echoed in the picture’s frame, which rolls across the screen in a way similar to a poor film projection, offsetting the illusion of movement. Or the images accentuate the music through superimpositions, short zooms and shots through cloudy glass. A small model of the Statue of Liberty then briefly disorients the viewer, and the vertical movement becomes horizontal, moving from Tokyo to Kyoto: Analogously to the laid-back drum’n'bass, the images then begin a relaxed and aimless journey through Japan’s urban spaces. In this phase, the two elements almost unite, in smooth parallel movement. Near the end, the rhythm materializes in the human body. Three kids break-dance in a city park and are then joined by others. While this is not an arrival at a certain destination, it is definitely more than a chance meeting. The escalators at a large train station continue to run mechanically, and the space does not come to rest until the music has faded away. (Dominik Kamalzadeh)

Oregon Big Wave Surf Contest

Salem-News.com’s Tim King and Dexter Phoenix report: The Nelscott Reef in Lincoln City was going off Thursday, once again providing 25+ foot waves for the annual surf contest known as the Nelscott Reef Tow-In Classic.

Competitors like Russel Smith of Santa Cruz, say the event was another ideal day for the top ranked professional surfers in the world who travel here each year to compete, “Oh today’s been great you know, not too much wind, the water’s not terribly cold and yeah, it’s going really well.”

Organizer John Forse and his team works hard crunching data to predict the best day for the biggest and most quality waves that break over this reef located a mile offshore.

Surfers practice aerials w/skateboards – Red Bull Project Air

The Red Bull surf team’s first aerial training session on the newly built skateboard bowl. Jordy Smith, Michel Bourez, Mick Fanning and Sally Fitzgibbons all tried adapting to the new board and skate deck – much different from a surf board and wave – and after a while it proved as a perfect training ground for aerials in the water.

Borrowing training concepts first proto-typed by snowboarder Shaun White during “Project X”, the best of the best, including two-time and reigning Men’s World Champion Mick Fanning, Women’s World Champion Sofia Mulanovich, Junior World Champions Julian Wilson and Sally Fitzgibbons, along with international stars Jordy Smith and Michel Bourez will be expanding, honing and refining their aerial repertoires with the assistance of professional coaches, pro skateboarders and the use of gymnastic facilities.

The star of the show is not any one of the surfers, but a custom-built skateboard bowl tailored specifically to surf style moves with right and left “breaking” ramps that are exposed to a large foam-pit.

Aerial surf training – Red Bull Project Air

Participants of Red Bull Project Air are welcomed to the camp with a big surprise – a custom made replica of Mark Richards 1978 Pipe Weapon”. Personally hand-signed by the former four-time world champ and legend MR, the single-fin replicas are a symbolic, tactile reference to the origins of competitive surfing. But after putting them to the test, the athletes decide that the best place for these special custom-made boards is on their wall.
